HNT 44 - "Up ye kilt...." photo update

I got my laptop computer back on Tuesday.
I hadn't thought to much about what I'd post for today's HNT, but I did spend some time Wednesday watermarking more photos. The last ones I did were taken up my kilt a few years ago, so I thought I might as well update that old post with the photos.

So click here to go to the old post: Up ye kilt. . . .

Oh, and the photo is a click through if you want to see it all.

HHNT everyone, and don't forget to check out the other HNTs at Osbasso's Views From the Back Row blog.

HNT #4 - '5 of a Kind' a Fringe play

Wow is it Thursday already?! Man did this one sneak up on me. Looking at it, I think a few more might be doing that in the near future.... so I better hold back on some of the half-nekkid photos.... ;-)

For today's HNT I will finally get around to the play I produced. Though it has some preamble before the photo.... so bear with me.

As mentioned previously mentioned (my first HNT post), I lived in the UK briefly. While there my good friend Hugh Kemeny came to visit. He came just around the time I left my job. I went off to attempt to bicycle from Land's End, Cornwall to John O'Groats, Scotland (a foolish journey that resulted in 3 days of bicycling - 4 if you count the day to get to Land's End - in the course of 10 days. At about the 80th mile I hit pavement and ended up in my first and only ambulance ride - with a couple of cute medics - and 5 stitches in my chin).

Hugh was planning on meeting up with me in Scotland. Instead I met up with him, along with another friend of mine, Matt, in Birmingham, backpacking it after the accident. After some time there I continued on to Scotland (I still made it to John O'Groats), and Hugh tagged along for some of that. We both made it back to Birmingham for Pride (2005), as we promised Matt and a mate of his Mark.

The story of the play is based on our journeys. Primarily Hugh’s time with Matt and Mark, and romantic interest with a bloke named Tom. He used some of my experiences to attempt to add more interest to the story (such as my cycling accident and journey from Land’s End to John O’Groats).

There is more information on the play (called '5 of a Kind') through his website: HughKemeny.ca

These events happened in April and May 2005, and around October 2006 Hugh was deep in writing the play, and very keen to get it produced at Fringe Theatre Festivals. I fronted the money to enter him in the Winnipeg, Saskatoon and Edmonton Fringes for 2007. And we managed to get into all 3 festivals.

My volunteering with the Edmonton International Fringe Theatre Festival meant that I had contact with a fellow volunteer, Adrian, who was willing to direct the play. Once the script was complete, and we had our director, we went out in search of actors.

The play has 5 main characters (David, Evan, Mike, Roger and Sean) and 2 minor characters (Naked Guy & Pride Guy). As I was fronting all the money, I quickly became the producer, and my interest in being involved grew. So I gladly took on the 2 minor character roles (knowing full well that one was walking across the stage naked).

Of the other 5 actors, 4 were selected in Edmonton, and 1 in Calgary (where I reside). Adrian lives in Grande Prairie, farther north of Edmonton than Calgary is south of Edmonton. So Edmonton was previously selected as our rehearsal city.

Roll Call: David was played by Sean (Edmonton), Evan by Sam (Calgary), Mike by Sammy (Edmonton), Roger by Alex (Edmonton), Sean by Kevin (Edmonton), and Naked/Pride Guy by me (Eric - Calgary).

June was rehearsals on weekend. Early July was final rehearsals, as mid July was the Winnipeg Fringe. The 7 of us (6 actors and Adrian directing/stage managing), drove the 1,350 km from Edmonton to Winnipeg in two days.

Winnipeg was a decent run for a new play, by a new author. Despite the fact we had a 300 seat venue (average 40 people per night), and critics panning it, citing most of all the multitude of set changes.

After the warm up in Winnipeg, we ventured to the Saskatoon Fringe (830 km back towards Edmonton). Where things slightly fell apart. One of the cast members asked to return home for personal reasons, I granted this provided we only cancel 3 of our 6 shows. The rest of the cast, along with Adrian returned to Edmonton during this time to promote our show there. After difficulty getting in contact with the actor that made the request, I finally got a hold only for him to informed me that he was to sick to perform the last two shows (we did one show before everyone returned to Alberta). So in the end I cancelled those as well.

I returned to Edmonton a little annoyed (as was most of the rest of the cast) - since my money was on the line here. The rest of the cast had agreed to profit sharing. With the cancellation of the Saskatoon shows it became very unlikely for us to break even (in the end I was still a grand or two in the hole).

The Edmonton Fringe run went fairly well, despite more problems with this one actor.

It was in Edmonton that we got one of our performances filmed. The photo below is a still shot from the DVD.

Just a little more about the play itself:
“An adventure of friendship, love, deception, betrayal, and self discovery.”
Although it was a gay theme play, Hugh and I were the only (openly) gay people involved in this production of the play.
Of the others, only one will I voice my opinion of, since I think part of his problems with the play was that he wanted more than just acting experience. But as producer I was not going to go there with him (or any of them).
About the photo: As previously mentioned, this is a still shot taken from the DVD - which was filmed on Wednesday 22 August 2007.

It is from the gay sauna scene, where David (the man Evan is infatuated with - sitting on the far left) convinces both Evan (sitting in the middle) and Sean (sitting on the right) to go to the sauna. Evan is interested, having never been. Sean tags along mostly because Evan is going, as Sean is not comfortable with nudity. David and Evan are gay, Sean is bi. As is typical in saunas, a man (Naked Guy) advertising himself, in this case showing his wares, walks past.
The point of this scene (which the critics did not get) was to show the reaction of the 3 main characters to a naked man: David is fixated, nearly drooling. Evan is interested, but more concerned with his friend Sean. Sean is horrified.

I was going to add a couple short videos here (the scene the picture is from and another), however I am not entirely sure how to get a clip from the DVD, yet.

Up ye kilt....

It is customary to celebrate Robbie Burns day by eating haggis: customary, not required.
As I have not ventured to find where I could get my haggis today, and not up for making my own, I decided to celebrate by wearing my kilt.

This is hence a good place to post my 'up ye kilt' photo:
R15-20040327-344.jpg
About this photo: It was taken Saturday 27 March 2004 at my sister's wedding reception, Belgium.
As is typical when I wear my kilt, I don't say how I wear it (regimental or not). I like to see what others do. I wore my kilt for my sister's ceremony, and a few of her friends were curious how I was wearing it (especially some of the Belgium ones), and I refused to tell them.
By the end of the reception dinner a couple of them seemed quite interested, and were trying to get me to tell them. There were disposable cameras on all the tables, and as the night was beginning to draw to a close (many of the guest had left, but still a couple hours before it was all over), a friend of my brother-in-law took one of the cameras. He lay on the floor near me and shuffled to get under my kilt and take a picture. As they had the impression I wore underwear (probably because when someone took a quick look earlier they saw my shirt), he closed his eyes before going under my kilt completely and taking the photo.
I just stood there as he did this, laughing internally at how easily I could stop him (walk away).
After he took the photo, I managed to get my hands on the camera, because I knew that photo was one my sister would probably not appreciate seeing. To this day I don't think the photographer ever did know what I was wearing under my kilt.

Other Kilt Stories:
Here are some other stories of people trying to find out what I wore under my kilt. For each story I obviously was wearing my kilt, and people were obviously wanting to know what I had underneath.

Saturday 9 October 2004: Annual Company Party, Reading, Berkshire, England.
This night in and of itself is a story unto its own, but I will not regale you with the full tale of that night of fun, intrigue, fantasy, and unknown sorrow today.
As part of the dinner there were social activities to partake in, including games. Such as a large 1.5 m x 1.5 m Connect Four game, which many people were enjoying. As I was watching one game, and chatting with a colleague (from another department I believe), a couple of girls came up behind me and started to lift my kilt. I was not taken by surprise and continued my conversation, letting the girls have their fun. Until the front of my kilt reached my penis. At that point I stopped the rising of the kilt and before I could turn the girls ran off. The back of my kilt must have been nearly half-way up my back.
The following Monday in the office (Taunton, Somerset, England), a colleague commented on how he would not forget being mooned by me.

Sunday 28 August 2005: Edmonton Fringe Festival Volunteer Wrap Party, Edmonton, Alberta, Canada.
I had worn my kilt off and on the entire week of the Fringe festival, and people commented on it quite often. I can't remember if any one checked before this night (I think some one did). This night I was dancing with people I met over the week, and a couple of them were afraid to do anything to find out what I was wearing underneath, though they expressed interest. It wasn't until the volunteer coordinator (whom I'd known for a couple years - he's gay and only found out earlier in the week that I was also gay), came and blatantly lifted up my kilt. I tried to stop him saying it was for them to find out their way. But it was done.

That is pretty much it for the interesting way people have found out. There have been of course others that have peeked under or perhaps quickly lift it, but there isn't much of a story to those. The only other quasi-story was one time on a date with a guy I was seeing. A friend of mine had a formal dress party at Chuck-E-Cheese (one of those kids restaurants with arcade games and cheesy shows). My date soon discovered how I wore my kilt, and needless to say he enjoyed the quick access on the drive home (more so after I parked the car, and I could enjoy too).

HNT #3 - Story

Here is a story perfect for HNT:

Last Thursday (17 Jan) I took HNT to point, thanks in part to friends. One in particular who came into town for the weekend. He easily convinced me to meet up at Twisted Element (gay bar in Calgary) for the 'Sexy Shorts' show. He even convinced me to participate, which I figured would happen, so I wore a suitable pair of underwear.

The Sexy Shorts show is were amateur guys get up in front of the crowd and strip down to their underwear. The crowd's favourite then wins money. At least that was my impression on only going that once.

Last Thursday there was 5 competitors (including me). Two had obviously been drinking. One was from Britain, and though he was drinking, was not acting as drunk as the other two. Myself, and the last guy was, under my impression, the bar's choice.

How it ended up working was the hostess did her opening, then introduced us. Then she did another song before we came up individually and did our strip.

The first, drunk, guy wasn't too bad, though he only had his trousers around his ankles. He did take his shirt off. He was wearing standard type briefs with a design on them (Union Jack on the front, flowers on the back).
The second, drunk, guy did take his trousers off completely, though he left his shirt up around his neck. He rolled down part of his standard type briefs, and showed some of his bare ass.
The third guy was the Brit, and he also kept his trousers at his ankles. I don't recall what underwear he had on, but he eventually took off his jumper (sweater) after the hostess encouraged him to, though he left on his t-shirt.
I was next and went all they way to my underwear.
The last guy, bar fave, he took his shirt off, and kept his trousers around his ankles as well. He had on a pair of boxers, which he did pull down to expose his bare ass, and nearly show his cock.

The hostess, then brought us back out and the audience cheered for their favourite. The first round of elimination resulted in the Brit and bar fave remaining. I was not surprised. Between the two of them, the Brit guy won.

I asked my friends what they thought, and they were impressed that I did it sober, which could be partly why I did not make it past the first vote. They also said the remaining two were a lot more sexual in the way they did their strip and dance. When I heard that, I knew that was why I did not make it. I don't usually exude sex.

My friends did not get photos, so on the weekend I took these photos, on my balcony, of me in the underwear I wore that night.

About these photos: They were taken Sunday 20 January 2008 in Calgary, Alberta, Canada.
As mentioned above, photos of me in the underwear I had on at the Sexy Shorts night at Twisted Element were not taken, that I know of. Therefore I took these photos specifically for this post.
I set up a tripod with my camera on it inside my apartment and went out onto my balcony, using the remote with my camera to take the photos. Because it had snowed over the past couple days, I thought pictures with the wintery backdrop would add a little to the photos, as opposed to a plain wall.
As the temperature was about -15 Celsius, I was out for only brief stints to take the picture, then inside to check the image and warm up.
