I participated in the 5 km walk - mostly because I knew I would not train up for the 10 km run.
Before I got a sunburn, I had planned on going to the Edmonton Pride Parade in my underwear (saving me from changing later), as it was before the Underwear Affair event. But as I was still recovering from the sunburn (it was only 8 days prior), I limited my exposure to the sun and was only in my underwear for the event.
I knew no one else doing it, but when I got to the Butterdome (the University Pavilion on the University of Alberta Campus - it's bright yellow and looks like a block of butter, hence the unofficial name), I saw someone I knew manning one of the information / sponsor booths: Knights of the Northern Realm. He was not participating in the walk/run, but Stephanie, who was helping out, was.
We ended up walking together, amongst the other 514 walkers. As we left the Butterdome (after the runners had already gone), there was already a small crowd (the largest crowd that I saw for the entire walk), including the cameras from 2 local TV stations. As I walked past, one of them seemed to have the camera follow me.... I'm going to have to see if I can find if there was any footage shown. Of course they could have been focusing on someone else... but I did have close to the most revealing 'outfit'. Though not as revealing as I was willing to go. I would have gone in just a jock strap had I raised over $1,100, but I only managed to get $910. Which I think was good for not much effort.
Along the walk we encountered a variety of people who either were expecting us, or not. One of the funniest moments was when we passed a car stopped to let us pass. The passenger was shaking his head. Stephanie, in a lace thong and bra with a pvc nurse's gown over top, then went and humped their car. Probably freaking them out.
We also passed by a wedding while they were doing their photos. They seemed to be enjoying watching the people in various costumes pass by - probably will be a wedding they won't forget. Someone in the party even yelled out at me 'hey there speedo boy' (as you can see in the pic below, not a speedo, but looks close).
After the walk, in which I finished at a time of 54:39.3, placing # 22 7 /514 walkers (and # 52 / 93 male walkers), there was some free food and a costume contest.
I really need to learn how to dance for a crowd.... I could have won the little glass plaque had I been able to.
There was suppose to be more of a party, but it seemed to die down quick, so I left too. Though on the way out I talked with a hunky firefighter, who had his shirt off. He'd volunteered to help marshal, but had his shirt on at that time. (I did not get his name, nor his number.)

About this photo: Taken Saturday 14 June 2008, University Pavilion (Butterdome), University of Alberta, Edmonton, Alberta, Canada.
This photo was taken before the race. I stripped down and put on sun block before leaving my bag in the 'bag area'. Just before handing in my stuff, I asked if someone could take a photo of me. My participant number is covering my ass - which is why you can't see it.
Hey, nothing like combining CHARITY and BEING NAKED!
